How to Move Apple Mail Settings and Email on a Mac

  • 1

Click the "Finder" icon on the dock to launch a new Finder window.

  • 2

Navigate to your account's Library folder in Mac OS X's Finder. Under Places, click your username (the one with the house icon) and then click "Library." You can also do this by selecting "Go" from the Finder's top menu and then "Go to Folder." Type in "~/Library" (without the quotes), and it will open up the Library folder.

  • 3

    Find the "Mail" folder.

  • 4

Copy the entire "Mail" folder onto a storage device (USB thumb drive or blank CD-R) or transfer it over the network to the same place (User:Library) on the other Macintosh computer.

  • 5

Go to the Preferences folder in the Library and locate the "com.apple.mail.plist" file. You can navigate there using the Finder window or select "Go" from the top menu of the Finder, click on "Go to Folder" and type in "~/Library/Preferences/" (without the quotes) in the prompt.

  • 6

Copy the "com.apple.mail.plist" file onto your USB thumb drive or CD-R or copy it directly to the User:Library:Preferences folder on the other computer over the network. "User" is your user account name.

  • 7

Plug in the USB thumb drive or insert the CD-R into the optical drive on the other Macintosh computer if you haven't transferred the files over the network.

  • 8

Move the "com.apple.mail.plist" file to the User:Library:Preferences folder of the other Mac. "User" is your user account name.

  • 9

Move the Mail folder to the User:Library folder on the other Mac.

  • 10

Launch Mail.app. Now your settings and email should be the same as those on the old Mac. If not, make sure both the Mail folder and the "com.apple.mail.plist" file are in the correct places.

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

    Summary

One way to back up your iTunes Library is to consolidate your library into one folder and then copy that folder to an external hard drive. This is a painless process that only takes a few moments to accomplish.

Note: If you would prefer to back up your iTunes Library by burning your library to CD or DVD click here.

    Products Affected

iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows

Step 1: Consolidating Your iTunes Library

To make the move as easy as possible, it's important to make sure all of the items in your library are in one place.

    1. Open iTunes Preferences:
Mac: From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
Windows: From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    2. Click Advanced and then click General.
    3. Make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checkbox is checked.

    4. Click OK.

Note: After you click OK, iTunes copies any music files that weren't in the iTunes Music folder, and places the copies in the folder. The original files are left in their original locations. To save space on your hard disk, you might want to delete the original files.
    5. From the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library. A message appears reading: "Consolidating your library will copy all of your music into the iTunes music folder. This cannot be undone."
    6. Click Consolidate.

Step 2: Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive

To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your external hard drive.
Mac OS X: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
      Windows: In My Computer
    3. Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
      Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
      Windows: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

      1. Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
Windows: From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
      2. Click Advanced and then click General.
      3. The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Music folder location box, as pictured below.

    4. Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

    5. When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive

Safari -> File -> Export Bookmarks.
Firefox -> Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import -> From file -> Choose file you saved in first step.

If you choose to import from Safari, it doesn't import all your bookmarks, only what is set in the Bookmarks Menu, but not the Bookmarks Bar. Doing it the above way does both.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

    Summary

This document explains how to reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) on Macintosh computers.

Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers

This document provides information and part numbers for backup and system batteries used in portable and desktop Macintosh computers since 1997-11. For Macintosh computers introduced prior to 1997-11, see technical document 11751, "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers".

Some Macintosh computers have a backup battery to maintain system settings, such as the date and time, when the computer is turned off . The battery may last up to five years. However, this varies due to the battery's shelf life, and usage patterns of the computer. The batteries used in Macintosh computers are lithium or alkaline, and are commonly 3.6 V to 4.5 V.

If your computer does not retain parameter RAM (PRAM) settings when it is turned off, this generally indicates that the battery needs to be changed. Some Macintosh models may display a black screen when you turn them on if the battery needs to be changed.

If you are uncomfortable changing the battery, an Apple Authorized Service Provider can install one for you.

Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)

    • Last Modified: May 13, 2008
    • Article: HT1431
    • Old Article: 14449

    Summary

Learn about the PowerBook and iBook Power Manager and how to reset it.

Resetting the power manager also resets date and time settings. After the reset, on some iBooks and PowerBooks, the system clock is set to 00:00 (GMT), 01 Jan 1970 for computers with Mac OS X or 00:00, 01 Jan 1904 for computers with Mac OS 9.

This article refers to Apple products manufactured November 1997 or later. For products manufactured before that date, see "PowerBook: Resetting Power Management Unit (PMU)".

    Products Affected

    iBook, PowerBook

The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of the PowerBook and iBook. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not seeing the AC Adapter, among others.

Resetting the PMU is not intended for resolution of a stall or situation in which the computer is unresponsive. A PMU reset should not be necessary except as a last resort in cases where a hardware failure of the power management system is suspected. Performing a PMU reset returns the iBook and PowerBook hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.

For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:

    1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
    3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)

Only perform a PMU reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation. If this is the case, see below for instructions on locating the reset button or key combination for your model of iBook or PowerBook. If your computer is earlier than the models listed here, see "PowerBook: Resetting Power Management Unit (PMU)".

Warning: Resetting the Power Manager on any PowerBook or iBook will permanently remove a RAM disk, if present, and all of its contents.

    Tips

Mac OS X Mail: How to Back Up Your Mail

This document describes how to back up mailboxes in the Mac OS X Mail application.

    Backing up your mail

You can back up your mailboxes to a CD or another disk. Copy the Mail folder, located in the Library folder in your home folder (~/Library/Mail), to save all of your mailbox contents. You can only backup POP accounts, or messages you've copied to On My Mac.

To make an mbox copy of a mailbox, drag the mailbox from the mailboxes drawer to your desktop. To create an mbox file with just some of the messages, select the messages, then choose Save As from the File menu. In the Format pop-up menu, choose Raw Message Source, then enter a name and save the file.

Note: The information in this document comes from Mac OS X Mail Help, the help system included with your computer. It is based on Mail 1.2.2 (v549/548). If a different version is installed on your computer, choose Mail Help from the Help menu. Updated or expanded information may also be available in other Knowledge Base documents.

    Safari bookmarks Backup

    Safari bookmarks

Safari bookmarks are all stored in a file called Bookmarks.plist, which is located at ~/Library/Safari/. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Safari folder.

To back up: Make a copy of the file in another location by holding down the Option key and dragging the Bookmarks.plist file to another location (such as the Desktop). The original file will remain (do not remove the original file from this location or your Safari bookmarks will be gone!).
As an alternative, you can compress the file into an archive—select the Bookmarks.plist file, then from the File menu in the Finder, choose Create Archive. The original file will remain.

To restore: Simply move the backup copy of Bookmarks.plist to the ~/Library/Safari/ folder. If you're restoring from an archive, don't forget to decompress the file (just double-click it).

Note: The Bookmarks.plist file contains only the Safari bookmarks for the currently logged-in user. If other users on the same Mac have their own user accounts and personal bookmarks, their Bookmarks.plist files are located in their Home folders.

    Address Book contacts Back up

    Address Book contacts

To back up: Open Address Book and choose Back up Address Book from the File menu. A dialog appears, asking you to choose a save location—it also adds the current date to the saved file name too. Choose where you want to save the backup, then click Save.
To restore: In Address Book, choose Revert to Address Book Backup from the File menu. In the resulting dialog, locate your backup file (it ends with a .abbu extension), select it, and click Open.

    iCal calendars Backup

    iCal calendars

To back up: Open iCal, then choose Back up Database from the File menu. In the resulting dialog, choose where you want to save the backup file (the current date also gets added to the name) and click Save.
To restore: Open iCal. From the File menu, choose Revert to Database Backup. In the resulting dialog, locate your backup file (it ends with a .icbu extension), select it, and click Open.

    Keychains Backup

    Keychains
Keychains are located in your ~/Library/Keychains/ folder. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Keychains folder.

Tip: Before you back up your keychains, use Keychain First Aid *** to repair any issues.

To back up: Make copies of your keychain files in a different location by Option-dragging each file to a desired location. Do not remove the originals. You can also use the Finder to create an archive as described in the Safari Bookmarks section, above.
    To restore:
In the Finder, from the Go menu, choose Utilities.
    Open Keychain Access.
From the Edit menu, choose Keychain List. A dialog appears, listing all keychain files.
Deselect the keychains that you wish to restore, then click OK.
    Quit Keychain Access.
Move your keychain back up files back to ~/Library/Keychains/.
    Open Keychain Access again.
From the Edit menu, choose Keychain List.
Select the keychains that you wish to use, then click OK.

    *** Solving problems with keychains

If you have some experience administering computers, you may be able to identify and resolve some keychain problems by using Keychain First Aid.

With Keychain First Aid, you can:
Verify and repair keychain settings and permissions
Reset a keychain (delete a keychain reference while preserving the keychain file)
Make the login keychain password the same as the login password
Set the login keychain as the default keychain
Set the login keychain to always remain unlocked

    To use Keychain First Aid:
Open Keychain Access located in Applications/Utilities, then choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.
Enter your user name and password.
Select, Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.
If there are problems, select Repair and then click Start.
To change the Keychain First Aid settings, choose Keychain Access > Preferences, then click First Aid.

    Mail preferences and messages Backup

    Mail preferences and messages

Your Mail accounts, rules, signatures, and Smart Mailboxes preference settings can easily be backed up. Tip: All Mail-related preference files should be backed up or restored as a group.

    To back up:
Note: These steps back up Mail preferences, but do not back up Mail messages (emails), although you can do that with the .Mac Backup utility. See below if you want to manually back up Mail messages (mailboxes).

Create a uniquely-named folder on your desktop (or other favorite location). For example, you might call it "Mail Prefs Backups May_15_2005" (adding a date is a good idea).
    Quit Mail if it's running.
In the Finder choose Home from the Go menu.
    Open the Library folder.
    Open the Preferences folder.
Copy the "com.apple.mail.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file. Don't remove the original file from its current location (this file contains your Mail accounts information).
    Close the Preferences folder.
    Open the Mail folder.
Copy the "MessageRules.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (this file contains your Mail rules).
Copy the "SmartMailboxes.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (you guessed it, this file contains Smart Mailboxes information).
Finally, copy the Signatures folder to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the folder. (Your custom signatures, if you use them, are stored here.)
    To restore:
Move all copies of the files and folders from your uniquely-named folder to the original locations from which they came, as listed above.

To manually back up Mail messages (emails)

You might wish to manually back up all your Mail messages from time-to-time. To back up entire mailboxes (where Mail stores messages), such as your Inbox, follow these steps:

    Quit Mail if it's open.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
    Open the Library folder.
Copy the folder "Mail" to your backup location, such as a different volume or burnable disc. Important: Do not remove the Mail folder from ~/Library. If you're backing up to the same volume, hold the Option key as you drag the folder to make a copy instead of moving it (a "+" cursor appears).
You can restore backed-up mailboxes at any time by quitting Mail and following the above steps, except for the last step where you copy your backed up Mail folder to ~/Library, instead of from it.
